Selma holds the distinction of being the only town in all of Alabama where over half of the entire population has a household income of less than $25k. To put that in perspective, the second-poorest city (Jackson) has a median household income of just over $30k.

Selma is famous for the Selma March, which was a march led by Martin Luther King, Jr. from Selma to Montgomery, from March 21-25, in 1965.
