Nature enthusiasts and gardeners, prepare to be bugged (in the best way possible)! Spring ushers in not just warmer weather and blooming flowers but also a once-in-a-lifetime cicada phenomenon. This year, for the first time since Thomas Jefferson’s presidency, two broods of cicadas will emerge together, creating a synchronized spectacle not witnessed in centuries. Find out which states will get the most buzzed.
Virginia
The Old Dominion State is no stranger to cicada invasions; this year is no exception. Brood XIX will make its presence known in various regions, including Richmond, Charlottesville, and Northern Virginia.
Maryland
Adjacent to Virginia, Maryland is poised for a cicada spectacle. The state will have Brood XIX in their skies, with St. Mary’s County the most affected.
Alabama
For Alabama residents, multiple regions are set to have the Brood XIX cicadas invade their area.
Arkansas
Parts of the state’s northwestern region, which has dense forest and highlands, will experience Brood 19 of the cicadas, which emerges once every 13 years.
Indiana
Indiana is one of only three states that will have both the Brood XIX and the Brood XIII emerge at the same time. This spectacle rarely happens; the next time the US will experience the double emergence is in 2245.
Illinois
The Land of Lincoln will be alive with the sounds of cicadas as Brood XIX and Brood XIII emerge in the southern and northern regions, respectively.
Georgia
In the southern reaches of the US, Georgia will experience its cicada invasion in the northern part of the state.
Kentucky
This year, Kentucky’s rolling hills and verdant landscapes will be abuzz with cicadas. Brood XIX will emerge in Louisville, Lexington, and Bowling Green regions.
Tennessee
From the Appalachian Mountains to the banks of the Mississippi River, Tennessee will witness the emergence of Brood 19 cicadas in various regions.
Louisiana
In the deep south side of the United States, Louisiana will see a lot of cicada activity this year, where Brood XIX will be prevalent.
Mississippi
Multiple regions in Mississippi will be abuzz with the XIX brood of cicadas.
Oklahoma
Residents of the Sooner State will experience cicadas in the Eastern part.
North Carolina
In the southeastern United States, North Carolina will have its cicada invasion in the central part of the state.
Missouri
From St. Louis to the Ozark Mountains, Missourians will witness a surge in cicada activity as Brood XIX emerges across the state.
Iowa
The famous Hawkeye State is the last of the three places to experience the double emergence of the Brood XIX and Brood XIII cicadas.
Wisconsin
Nestled in the heart of the Upper Midwest, Wisconsin is poised for a sonic spectacle! Brood XIII, a 17-year cicada brood, will erupt from the ground this spring.
South Carolina
In South Carolina, the emergence of periodical cicadas is not evenly distributed but expected in forested and undeveloped areas throughout the Upstate. The counties most likely to experience significant cicada activity include Aiken, Anderson, Greenville, Laurens, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg, Union, and York.
