Outer Mission is an offshoot of the Mission District and development of the community began in 1910. The Southern Pacific Railroad serviced the surrounding area which helped to increase the population of Italian and Irish immigrants who worked on the railroad. It was largely a farming community until the 1950s when the demographics of the area began to undergo a change. By the middle 60s, the population was mostly African Americans who moved from southern states in search of a better life and purchased homes in the area. In the late 80s, drug traffic because an issue and the neighborhood fell into disrepair. Yet another shift occurred in the mid 90s with an influx of Latino and Asian homeowners while about twenty percent of the population remains African American with some Filipino families of a smaller percentage.
