Just as some families are known for their political dynasties or medical expertise, others have made their mark in entertainment. Is it the inherited talent or the environment that shapes these stars? In no particular order, have a look at the acting dynasties that have left an indelible mark on the silver screen.
The Barrymore Family
The Barrymore family stands as a cornerstone of American theater and film history. John Barrymore’s legendary performances captivated audiences in the early 20th century, notably in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and he received a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His sister, Ethel Barrymore, achieved critical acclaim, winning an Academy Award for None but the Lonely Heart. Their brother Lionel Barrymore won an Academy Award for Best Actor for A Free Soul. John’s granddaughter, Drew Barrymore, continued the family legacy with a successful acting career, earning a Golden Globe and three MTV Movie Awards, amongst other awards.
The Baldwins
Alec Baldwin’s performances in 30s Rock and other projects have earned him positive reviews, and won him, among others; two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. Stephen Baldwin gained recognition for The Usual Suspects, earning a National Board of Review Award for Best Acting by an Ensemble. William Baldwin is known for Backdraft and has received a Gotham and Paris Film awards. Daniel Baldwin’s role in Grey Gardens (HBO) and his Best Supporting Actor win at the Madrid International Film Festival for Helen Alone highlight his success.
The Coppolas
The Coppola family gained the spotlight with Francis Ford Coppola’s direction of The Godfather trilogy, which remains a pinnacle of cinema — he has five Academy Awards. His daughter, Sofia Coppola, is a director and screenwriter that has won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Lost in Translation. Nicolas Cage, Francis’ nephew, became a renowned actor with an eclectic career, winning an Academy Award for Best Actor for Leaving Las Vegas.
The Fonda Family
Henry Fonda became one of the most respected actors of his time, having iconic roles in classics like The Grapes of Wrath, for which he won an Academy Award. His children, Jane and Peter, further cemented the Fonda name in Hollywood with their impressive careers. Jane Fonda won two Academy Awards, including one for Klute, and became an activist. Peter Fonda earned acclaim for Easy Rider and won two Golden Globe Awards.
The Wayans
Comedy was revolutionized by Keenan Ivory Wayans with his creation of In Living Color, earning him an Emmy Award. His brothers, Damon, Shawn, and Marlon, also gained prominence in comedy and acting, notably in films like White Chicks. Damon Wayans made his mark with The Last Boy Scout and received People’s Choice and BET awards. Shawn Wayans, a star in White Chicks, garnered a BET Comedy Award. Similarly, Marlon Wayans, known for his role in Requiem for a Dream, earned a BET Comedy Award.
The Phoenix Family
Arguably one of the best villain portrayals of all time, Joaquin Phoenix’s role in Joker earned him an Academy Award, showcasing his immense talent. His brother, River Phoenix, left a lasting legacy with a brief but impactful career, best known for Stand by Me and winning NBR and NSFC Awards. Their sisters, Rain, and Summer Phoenix, have also made their marks in acting. Rain starred in O and was nominated for a Young Artist Award, while Summer is recognized for her role in The Believer, earning an Independent Spirit Award nomination.
The Douglas Family
Winning an honorary Academy Award for 50, Kirk Douglas became a Hollywood icon best known for Spartacus. His son, Michael Douglas, followed in his footsteps, achieving great success with films like Wall Street and winning two Academy Awards. The Douglas family’s contributions to the film industry span decades, with Michael’s son, Cameron Douglas, also venturing into acting. Cameron starred in It Runs in the Family and is recognized as a rising actor.
The Sheens/Estevezes
Having impacted both film and television substantially, the Sheens/Estevezes have cemented their places in entertainment history. Martin Sheen’s iconic role in Apocalypse Now set a high standard, and his awards include a Golden Globe, an NBR, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Primetime Emmy, and an induction into the Walk of Fame. The Smiths
The Smith family is a household name influencing music, film, and philanthropy. Will Smith is best known for The Pursuit of Happyness and has won an Academy Award, three BET Awards, a Golden Globe, and four Grammys. Jada Pinkett Smith starred in The Matrix Reloaded and has won a Daytime Emmy and two NAACP Image Awards. Jaden Smith is known for The Karate Kid and has won BET and MTV Movie awards. Willow Smith succeeded with her music hit Whip My Hair and won a BET Award and an NAACP Image Award.
The Hemsworths
Aside from good looks, the Hemsworths have carved significant niches in Hollywood, especially in action films. Chris Hemsworth, famous for being the Avengers’ Thor, has achieved international stardom, winning an MTV Award and four People’s Choice Awards. His brother, Liam Hemsworth, rose to fame with The Hunger Games, earning a People’s Choice Award and a Zurich Film Festival Award. Although Luke Hemsworth has not won any awards, he has had a cameo in Thor: Ragnarok and received notable nominations from the Screen Actors Guild and the British Independent Film Festival.
The Gyllenhaals
Made up of directors, screenwriters, and actors, The Gyllenhaals have left a distinct mark on Hollywood. Jake Gyllenhaal, best known for roles in Donnie Darko and Brokeback Mountain, has earned a BAFTA Award and three Hollywood Film Awards. His sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, has also garnered critical acclaim, winning a Golden Globe Award, two Boston Society of Film Critics Awards, and three Film Independent Spirit Awards for performing in films like Secretary. Their parents, Stephen and Naomi, contribute behind the scenes, with Stephen Gyllenhaal directing Paris Trout and winning a Directors Guild of America Award. Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal wrote Running on Empty, and for it, she received an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe.
The Fishers
With Eddie having two stars on the Walk of Fame, the Fishers’ legacy in entertainment spans music, film, and literature. Eddie Fisher, known for his role in Bundle of Joy, also won a Golden Globe. His daughter, Carrie Fisher, became iconic as Princess Leia in Star Wars, and she has a Grammy Award for spoken words and secured a star on the Walk of Fame. Debbie Reynolds, Carrie’s mother and Eddie’s former wife, starred in Singin’ in the Rain and was honored with an Academy Award, and also won an NBR and a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award.

Lloyd Bridges’ career laid the groundwork for his sons, Jeff and Beau, to follow in his footsteps. He was best known for Airplane! and received a walk of fame star and two Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Jeff Bridges starred in Crazy Heart and won an Academy Award, Critics’ Choice Award, Golden Globes, and NBR Awards. Beau Bridges has also enjoyed a successful acting career, being known for The Fabulous Baker Boys, and has won three Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes, a Grammy Award, and a star on the Walk of Fame.
The O’Neals
This formidable father-daughter duo, the O’Neals, has had a lasting impact on Hollywood. Ryan O’Neal became a heartthrob with his role in Love Story, earning two Golden Globe nominations, one Academy Award nomination, and a star on the Walk of Fame. His daughter, Tatum O’Neal, made history by winning an Academy Award for Paper Moon at a young age and has a Golden Globe also. Together, they have navigated success and personal challenges, maintaining their status as notable figures in the industry.
The Deschanel Family
The Deschanel name was put on the map for The Passion of the Christ thanks to Caleb Deschanel, a renowned cinematographer with six Academy Award nominations, a Hollywood Film Award, and an NBR Award. His daughters, Emily and Zooey Deschanel, are equally reputable. Emily is a star in the series Bones, earning a Satellite Award among 13 other nominations.
