The Top Ten Rated High Schools in Miami

Everyone strives to be the best at everything they do. The same philosophy holds true for area high schools. Within the Top 25 schools in the United States, Miami’s Design and Architecture Senior High School is number 20 on the list followed by International Studies Charter School. Therefore, on a national level, Miami has two excellent schools that can compete with other cities. Within Miami-Dade County, there are 108 public high schools, many of which are excellent learning institutions.

This list pulls from the U.S. News and World Report’s 2015 Rankings of those schools in Miami-Dade County. This list was determined using three categories, average proficiency in math, average proficiency in reading and college readiness.

The following is a list of the top ten rated school districts in Miami.

Mater Academy Charter

Rounding out the top of the list is Mater Academy Charter High School which is ranked 23rd in the State of Florida. With a 77-percent proficiency in math, 65-percent proficiency in reading and 58.8-percent college readiness index, Mater Academy gives students the opportunity to enroll in Advanced Placement classes which can earn them college credits while in high school. Across the entire student body, there is an 87-percent participation rate in the Advanced Placement program.

Moving up one spot from last year’s ranking is the Doral Academy Charter High School which boasts a proficiency rating slightly above Mater. With a reading proficiency of 74-percent and math proficiency of 81-percent, the school also has a college readiness of 58.9-percent. The reason Doral Academy is on this list is due to the student body’s 74-percent participation rate in Advanced Placement classes and examinations.

New World School of the Arts

Ranked as the 306th best school in the United States, the New World School of the Arts is 8th amongst the other 56th magnet schools and 20th in the State of Florida. The school actually began as an experiment between Miami-Dade College and Miami Northwestern Senior High school that resulted in one of the top schools in the state for visual and performing arts. It also has come of the highest proficiency rates of 89-percent in math and 88-percent in reading. The college readiness average rating is 60.6.

Coral Reef Senior High

Ranked as number 37 across all magnet schools in the United States, Coral Reef Senior High School is the 7th best in Miami-Dade County. In addition to the Advanced Placement program, the school has curriculums for Leisure Medicines and Health Sciences, Business and Finance, Legal and Public Affairs, Agriscience and Engineering Technology and a Visual and Performing Arts program. Additionally, Coral Reef provides the opportunity for students to engage in an International Baccalaureate program.

Doral Performing Arts and Entertainment Academy

As a public charter school, the Doral Performing Art and Entertainment Academy has a small student population of 232 with a 77-percent math and reading proficiency rate. Within the Advanced Placement program, there is a 90-percent participation rate amongst all students. As a result, the school ranks 13th in the State of Florida.

Young Women’s Preparatory Academy

As the only all-female school on this list, the Young Women’s Preparatory Academy is located in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami and is another magnet school. With an enrollment of only 404, students are given a much more personalized experience with the teachers. For this reason, the reading and math proficiency rate is 89-percent and the college readiness percentage is 87.5-percent.

MAST Academy

Focused on marine studies, the MAST Academy boasts math and reading proficiency rates of 94-percent and a college readiness index of 87.5-percent. In addition to the essential high school curriculum, the MAST academy gives students the chance to learn about different marine studies such as Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, Marine Related Industries and Maritime Studies and Culture.

Archimedean Upper Conservatory Charter School

Yet another charter school to make this list is the Archimedean Upper Conservatory Charter School (AUC) which is a member of the Archimedean Schools, a charter school system that was founded by the Archimedean Academy Inc. in 2002. Students at this high school are selected through a lottery system and do not have to pay tuition while still receiving a top-notch education. As a top school in Florida, AUC’s extensive extracurricular activities and curriculum were developed to provide students with discipline and balanced academics of the highest quality. AUC has been ranked fifth in the state and 16th in the United States amongst other charter schools.

International Studies Charter High School

International Studies Charter High School

Created by the French, Spanish and Italian Embassies, the International Studies Charter High School (ISCHS) is the fourth ranked charter school in the state. The school earns a 100-percent college readiness index and gives students numerous language options, of course including French, Spanish and Italian. Of all schools in the Miami metropolitan area, it has one of the most diverse student bodies. Proficiency ratings in math and reading are well above average making it the top school in Miami-Dade County.

Design and Architecture Senior High

Design and Architecture Senior High

Ranked second in the state but sixth amongst magnet schools, the Design and Architecture Senior High School (DASH) has numerous programs in the architecture and interior design fields as well as fashion design, industrial design, entertainment technology visual communications and web design. DASH also offers students dual-enrollment college design courses that are taught by college professors. The structure of the classes is an eight course curriculum versus the traditional six courses. Additionally, DASH aids students in finding internships with Miami-based design firms.

With thousands of school districts across the United States, there are some mediocre and others that are shining stars. In Miami, there are two schools that rank in the top 25 best schools in the United States. Most of the schools on this list have some type of specialty be in science, performing arts, design or entertainment that allow the students to focus on a curriculum that they are passionate about. Although the core classes are still required, this allows them to achieve excellent grades and really specialize in specific areas of achievement.
