Hummingbirds are delicate wonders with wings too fast to see and are in a perpetual struggle for survival. Despite their agility and speed, they are constantly under threat, both from the ground and the sky. Here are eight predators that view these marvels not as wonders but as potential meals, underscoring the constant danger these tiny creatures face.
Bats
While bats are typically known to feed on insects, it’s unexpected that some larger bats can actually hunt hummingbirds. These nocturnal hunters use echolocation to track and capture hummingbirds, especially when the birds are less active at dusk. This unexpected threat means hummingbirds are never truly safe, even after the sun sets, adding a layer of intrigue to their survival story.
Wasps
Wasps usually hunt insects, but certain aggressive species have been observed attacking and killing hummingbirds. They fiercely defend their territory and can sting repeatedly. A hummingbird venturing too close to a wasp nest might find itself facing a deadly swarm.
