Known as The Last Frontier, Alaska was one of the last states to join the United States. With less than 60 years of statehood under its belt, Alaska has become a very popular destination for Americans looking to experience a different way of life. With lots of natural beauty and plenty of incredible things to see, many people see Alaska as the perfect place to go to escape the busy and commercial culture that many other places have become accustomed to. But while live in Alaska can certainly be adventurous and rewarding, many people decide to make the move without realizing what they’re getting themselves into. As with any other move, it’s always nice to have a little heads up before you decide to pack up and head out. Here are five things you should know about living in Alaska.

For people in many major cities all over the world, seeing the stars at night is nothing more than a distant dream. With all of the light pollution that comes from residents, it can be nearly impossible to go stargazing at night. However, in Alaska, you’ll find that this isn’t a problem. In fact, you’ll probably be able to see the night sky like never before. Plus, you’ll also be able to experience the Northern Lights in a way you’ve probably never imagined.

Things can get a little expensive

Alaska certainly isn’t a fancy or glamorous place, which may give some people the idea that it’s not very expensive. However, that idea couldn’t be further from the truth. Living in Alaska can be very pricey. Not only are many of the housing options a little on the expensive side, but food will likely cost you way more than you are used to paying. Since most things have to be transported to Alaska, you can expect to pay a pretty penny for basic items like eggs, milk, and fruit.

The sun will surprise you

Living in Alaska is something that your body will certainly have to get used to, and it’s not just because the weather can get extremely cold. Alaska is known for having continuous periods of sunlight as well as continuous periods of no sunlight at all. For your body’s natural clock this can present a very serious problem as you’ll find it difficult to sleep when the sun is constantly shinning, and impossible to get up when the sun never comes out.

Fashion isn’t a priority

Okay, so this isn’t to say that the people of Alaska don’t know anything about style, but the reality is that many people in Alaska are more concerned with practicality than fashion. Since many places in Alaska can be a little more on the remote side, dressing comfortably is definitely a must. You may find that walking around in heels simply isn’t a good idea in many cases, and breaking out the boots and sneakers might make a lot more sense.

Even flights to relatively close places such as Seattle can get very pricey, and many flights will also be extremely long and require more than one layover.
