While there are thousands of apartments located in New York City, you’ll have to be ready to shell out thousands of dollars each month for rent if you want to call one home. Manhattan is one of the hottest cities for real estate but also (year after year) one of the most expensive. The average price you’ll pay for a studio is $2,361, which is a record high and there are no signs of anything slowing down. Unfortunately for renters, there doesn’t appear to be any relief in sight, as prices are expected to continue to climb in the upcoming years. But if you have the funds then there are options available. We decided to take a look at five areas in NYC and see what $10,000 a month can get you.
Upper West Side
Set between Central Park and Riverside Park, the Upper West Side is perfect for anyone who is a fan of an area with plenty of greenery and more of a residential vibe. For $10,000, you can get a spacious apartment with upgrades, such as this one at 48 W. 86th St. This particular apartment, which has around 1,900 sq. ft.,includes an impressive 4 flex bedrooms (could be made into 5) and 4 bathrooms. As an added bonus, the bedrooms, each of which has its own bathroom, can accommodate up to a king-sized bed and include plenty of closet space.
The apartment has beautiful oak floors throughout, with the exception of the ceramic tiled bathrooms. The kitchen is wide open with granite counter tops, high-end cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. You can see through to the living room, which is large enough for a L-shaped couch, dining table, and more. The building has elevators, as well as a laundry room for tenants and a live-in super. It is both cat and dog friendly.
Upper East Side
With a longstanding reputation for being a sophisticated and peaceful area of the city, as well as being mainly occupied by residents with old money, it would be easy to assume you wouldn’t be able to get a lot for $10,000 on the Upper East Side. However, this isn’t the case. You can get an apartment with around 1,600 sq. ft., such as this one at 167 E. 2nd St. Located in the Merritt House, it includes a full-time doorman and live-in super, as well as gym, children’s playground, gorgeous outdoor patio/ garden, full service party room for private parties, and a catering kitchen.
The apartment includes 3 bedrooms that offer cityscape views, 2.5 bathrooms, an eat-in kitchen with large windows that ensure plenty of natural light is always shining, and a large living area with a working fireplace. In addition, there are upgrades in every room, including gorgeous light hardwood floors in the main living areas, as well as a kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances, a wine cooler under the counter, custom cabinetry, and marble floors with a mosaic in-lay border. Finally, the spa-like bathrooms ensure anyone who lives here always feel like they are living in the lap of luxury.
SoHo
SoHo, considered to be one of the trendiest and most exciting parts of the city and is primarily home to historic buildings and warehouses that have undergone conversions. It also happens to be an area of the city that is home to many famous people, including Anderson Cooper, Beyonce and Jay-Z, Jon Bon Jovi, and Kelly Ripa. Thanks to all SoHo has to offer, $10,000 a month doesn’t go too far, but you can still get a decently sized apartment, such as this one at 83 Spring St. The 2,000 sq. ft. duplex loft has a single bedroom and 2 bathrooms and is located in a pre-war building with keyed elevator access.
In addition to being conveniently located near all types of retail and dining options, it is just a block away from the train. The loft includes a 432 sq. ft. private deck, a 2,000 sq. ft. secluded deck, and a huge private and locked storage unit in the basement. It features exposed brick walls, skylights, 12′ ceilings, designer bathrooms (one even has a Jacuzzi), in-unit washer/ dryer, a gigantic walk-in closer, and a California kitchen with all the upgrades. Pets, who will definitely love all the outdoor space the loft has to offer, are considered on an individual basis.
Greenwich Village
Thanks to its tree-lined streets, beautiful landscaping and architecture, countless cute cafes, and slightly bohemian vibe, Greenwich Village is certainly a great part of NYC to live in. So, what can you get for $10,000? An incredibly ornate, yet cozy apartment, such as this one at 4 E 12th St., which has 1,400 sq. ft. and 2 (possibly 3) bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
This home has everything from a Chef’s kitchen with all the upgrades to a huge master suite with a gorgeous tiled en suite bathroom and plenty of closet space. Beautifully designed, it features 13 ft. ceilings, built-in bookshelves, stained glass transom, hardwood floors with a unique inlaid border, two chandeliers, a spiral staircase,l and recessed lighting. Conveniently located in the back to ensure there is no traffic noise, the office can also be used as a bathroom and looks out at the private garden and koi pond below.
Unfortunately, pets are not allowed in this apartment and a two year lease is required.
Kips Bay in Midtown
Located on Manhattan’s east side between Gramercy and Murray Hill, Kip’s Bay was once considered nothing more than an afterthought. However, the area actually has a lot to offer residents, including a quietness and safeness not found in other parts of the city (likely because it isn’t an area frequented by tourists). Despite its residential feel, there are plenty of small restaurants and shops to choose from. If you head to Kips Bay with $10,000, you are sure to be happy with what you can rent, such as this luxury townhouse at 218 E. 30th St.with 2,000 sq. ft., 3 bedrooms, 3 brand new bathrooms, and an 800 sq. ft. private garden.
The townhome has a private entrance, as well as a state-of-the-art video security system, and individual temperature control. Its open floor plan includes a large living space, upgraded kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances, and 350 sq. ft. master bedroom with two walk-in closets. It also features high ceilings, fireplace, a floor-to-ceiling window in the master, hardwood floors, and a window seat that looks out over the street below. A washer/ dryer is located in the basement laundry room.
