10 Things Only People Living In The South Bronx Would Understand

There are five boroughs in New York City. They include Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and The Bronx. Just because you technically live in New York City, it doesn’t mean that you will understand what it is like to live in each borough. Take The Bronx for example. There are things about this area that you would never know unless you live there. There are also many things that we need to explain to people not only in other parts of the country but also in other boroughs.

We Don’t Tell People We Are From New York

If you are from The Bronx, you never tell people that you are from New York. If we take a vacation to Florida or California and we meet someone, we still won’t tell them that we are from New York. We are from The Bronx and that’s it. We are also the only borough who gets “The” as an introduction before the name of our beloved borough. That is because The Bronx is The Best.

Our Fair Borough is the Birthplace of Hip Hop

People in cities all over the world will say that their city was where hip-hop was born. Sadly, they would all be wrong unless they are from The Bronx. This is where Grandmaster Flash and the Sugarhill Gang got their start. If they weren’t the fathers of hip-hop, I don’t know who is. Those of us who live her take pride in the fact that hip-hop was born here.

We Are a Loud Borough

If noise in all of New York City was scientifically measured, the noise level in The Bronx would definitely be the loudest. The noise begins with the Bleacher Creatures in Yankee Stadium. If you have ever been to a game, you would know who these people are. They are the people in the bleachers who cheer the team on by yelling a screaming. Even the people walking down the street are loud. Whether they are talking to each other or talking on the phone, they speak at unnecessarily high levels. If you are from The Bronx, it is nothing new. You would be loud also. If you are just visiting, you may want to pack a pair of earplugs.

We Are Responsible For Stickball and Proud Of It

Stickball was born in The Bronx in the middle of the 20th century. There aren’t too may kids who can say that they have never played a game of stickball on the street at least once. We even have a street called Stickball Boulevard to honor the pastime that we created. We even have a team in a professional league called The Bronx Royals.

Pelham Parkway Beats Rockefeller Center Any day

Tourists flock to New York City to visit Rockefeller Center every year during the holidays. They want to see the giant tree with the amazing light displays. If you are from The Bronx, you know that it isn’t worth the subway ride to Rockefeller Center. Pelham Parkway is much better during the holidays. The Christmas lights are much more fun and less organized. This is the place to go if you want to see a real Christmas display.

We Have the Best Pizza in New York City

Everyone talks about how great the pizza in New York City has. Because of this, many tourists head to midtown to one of the pizza joints over there. Unless you are from The Bronx, you won’t know what good pizza is. Sure midtown sells some pretty good pizza but it is nothing like what you will find at John and Joe’s Pizza on Lydig Ave in The Bronx. It puts all other pizzas to shame.

We Have Our Own Little New England

Most people hear The Bronx and they think about subways, cabs, busy streets, and loud people. While we do have these things in The Bronx, most people don’t know about City Island. It is an island that is considered to be part of The Bronx, and it can be compared to one of New England’s little coastal villages. The island is beautiful and it is home to some of the best restaurants in all of New York City. The seafood restaurants are reason enough to visit City Island.

The Bronx Isn’t All Concrete

As mentioned above, if you aren’t from The Bronx you think that it is all just city streets, storefronts, apartment buildings, and subways. There is much more to our borough than just that. If you want to get away for the city streets, you can take a trip to Pelham Bay Park, This park is bigger than Central Park, and it is much safer. If you don’t want to visit Pelham Bay Park, you can always take in the sites at Van Cortland Park, Bronx Park, the Botanical Garden, The Bronx Equestrian Center, or The Bronx Zoo. Just because we live in The Bronx, it doesn’t mean that we cannot get close to nature every once in a while.

Edgar Allan Poe Lived Here

People in Baltimore think that they are so cool because Edgar Allan Poe lived there. He lived in The Bronx also. He was living in a cottage in our fair borough when he wrote Annabelle Lee and Eureka. You can even go and visit the cottage if you don’t believe it.

We Know How To Cool Off During the Summer

If you have ever seen people on television cooling off with a fire hydrant, people really did that in The Bronx. Since the police don’t take too kindly to us doing that, we spend more time at The Bronx swimming pools than we do at the “Johnny pumps”.

The Bronx may be part of New York City, but we may as well be a world away. We have our own customs and our own attitudes that make us different from people who live in other boroughs. Manhattan is for the Wall Street types. Brooklyn is where the artists and the Yuppies call home, but The Bronx is for real people. We speak our minds and we don’t feel bad about it. If you are from The Bronx, you understand that it is the best borough in New York City.
