When you live in a city long enough, you get know a lot about the people and little bits of trivia that others may not know. Every city has its own history, traditions, secrets and stories. People in the area may develop quirky little sayings or ways of communicating that those on the outside may not know. Only if you are a native to a city or live there long enough do you learn these details that make each city and its people, unique from anywhere else. Beverly Hills, California is no different. As one of the most well-known and visited cities in the world, there is a lot that people do know about BH, however, there are still plenty of things about the city, and the people who live there, that most people don’t get. Here are 10 things only people who live in Beverly Hills understand.

1. People rarely make eye contact

Southerners have always been known for their warm hospitality. And most people will agree that down in the south, conversations flow as easily as the sweet tea they’re also known for. People are typically easy to approach and strike up a conversation with, even on the streets. Apparently that just isn’t the case everywhere across the USA. Way out west in Beverly Hills, apparently people are much more serious when walking down the street and aren’t as quick to throw you a glance. If you’re new to Beverly Hills or just visiting, don’t think you’re the only one passerby’s won’t lift an eye to. Eye contact with others when walking down the street is a bit harder to come by in Beverly Hills.

2. Don’t try to pawn a toaster

Are you low on cash and need a quick loan? Out in Beverly Hills, you won’t find pawn shops on any street corner. Not at least the kind you imagine when you think of a store that trades guns, jewelry or toasters for cash. Beverly Hills residents only know pawn shops as “collateral lenders,” and a toaster or vacuum won’t get you anything but a funny look. However, if you have a Ferrari or Mercedes you want to get a quick loan for, chances are you may be able to make a deal.

3. Shopping on Rodeo Drive

Shopping on Rodeo Drive for the wealthy really means shopping. They don’t need there to be sales in order for them to make a purchase, and furthermore, they know there aren’t any, anyways. If you see something you like but can’t afford it, don’t bother coming back in hopes of it being on sale later. Rodeo doesn’t do sales and they don’t offer any restaurants or snack shops so if you get hungry walking down shop alley, you’ll have to leave Rodeo or be sure to fuel up before you go.

4. No pedestrians

It’s just a known fact, pedestrians make Beverly Hills residents nervous. No one cares for pedestrians much, except when you’re walking from shop-to-shop in town spending money. But out of town, pedestrians in a residential area are not as welcomed. Those who live in Beverly Hills are pretty familiar with this unspoken rule but if you’re not a resident and unknowingly take off on foot to wander, you’re taking a risk of getting stopped by a cop. You’ll have t show ID and will be made to feel like an intruder.

5. No one is born or dies in Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills is strictly a shop and homes kind of city. You won’t find billboards, power lines or telephone lines, industries, parks or playgrounds. You also won’t see smokestacks or eyesores when driving through the city. Do you know what else you won’t find in Beverly Hills? Hospitals or cemeteries. Resident’s joke that no cemetery means that at least you aren’t forced to think about your mortality. It is also said that with no hospitals or cemeteries, nobody is born or dies in Beverly Hills.

6. Craving cupcakes? Everyone gets Sprinkles

Sprinkles became a cupcake lovers sensation from when they first opened. It seems like everyone knows of Sprinkles in Beverly Hills and it’s “the” place to go for a gourmet cupcake. 7. Night life

The night life is always happening in Beverly Hills. There are more than enough places to gather and party till dawn and it’s all about luxurious hotel lounges, rooftop pools and cozy bars. Not everyone knows where the favorite hotspots are for the local so here’s a tip. Another popular hotel lounge is the Tropical Trader Vic’s Tikki bar at the Beverly Hills Hilton. If you think you can just show up in any attire to party for a while, you would be wrong. If you want to hang with the locals and the wealthy in their nightlife environment, here are a few tips: Have plenty of cash for valets and always dress up. It’s the unwritten code and you don’t want to be turned away at the door.

8. The correct way to say – Rodeo Drive

You may be asked to leave the strip if anyone hears you pronouncing Rodeo Drive like a cowboy rodeo. Rodeo Drive is one of the most famous streets in the world where the rich and famous are often spotted spending big bucks in the extravagant shops and boutiques, but definitely no cowboys are around. So if you want to look even halfway like you know where you are, you might want to practice saying it right…Rodeo is pronounced, Roh-DAY-oh.

9. New Year’s Eve at Grand Park

When you can’t make it to Time’s Square in NY because you live all the way out west in Beverly Hills, the next best thing is New Year’s Eve at Grand Park in LA. Los Angeles is a neighboring city and it’s one city many people from Beverly Hills frequent, including for events at Grand Park. It’s a familiar name to anyone in the area and they know it’s one place you can ring in the New Year in New York style with lots of music and stages for bands and DJ’s and plenty of food trucks and stands.
