
If you ever look at old law books, even some new ones, you will find some very strange laws. Some of the laws are so strange, they make you wonder how they became laws in the first place. For most of the laws that are in place, something had to have happened to make someone put these laws into effect. Unfortunately, you would need to do some very extensive research to find out the origin of these laws. Some laws have no record of their origins. It is not just criminal law that has some crazy laws, there are also some very odd real estate laws. Some of the very strange ones aren’t followed anymore.
Waldron Island, Washington
Law: No Building Can Have More Than Two Toilets
Waldron is a very small island located between Washington State and Canada. This island isn’t as developed as those around it. It has a small elementary school and a post office. The people who live on the island like it that way. They also like that the population is very low. This is the reason that the law went into effect People believe that not too many residents want a home with less than two toilets. If you are willing to live like that, there are four properties on the island for sale. People who live there need to have an airplane or a boat because there is no ferry service to or from the island.
Boulder, Colorado
Law: You Cannot Have a Couch On Your Porch
In Boulder, you cannot have any upholstered furniture on your porch. This includes couches, chairs, and mattresses. The reason this law was passed is because rowdy college students would get drunk and set fires to the couches outside. After Boulder passed the law, many other cities decided to pass a similar law. These include Ames, Iowa, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Columbia, Missouri.
Walnut, California
Law: No Dirt, Rock, Sand, or Cement On Your Property
If you live in Walnut, California, you are not allowed to put dirt, rocks, cement, or sand on your property. Also, you cannot leave rubbish outside and you cannot bury your dead pets in your year. Considering this is California, and there has been a drought there for years, you would think that the town would welcome homeowners using materials on their property that don’t require water. Chance are, this law isn’t strictly enforced since there are several homes in the town that violate the law.
The State Of Michigan
Law: The Last Sunday In June is Officially “Log Cabin Day”
In 1989, Michigan stated Log Cabin Day, to celebrate all of the log cabins in the state. On this day, you can even visit an 1800’s log cabin in Detroit, which was once considered to be the country. People who live in log cabins in Michigan make a big deal about this day and they take great pride in their homes.
Aspen, Colorado
Law: It Is Illegal To Throw Snowballs At Your House
Millions of people flock to Aspen every year for fun in the snow. Unfortunately, you aren’t allowed to have snowball fights in Aspen. According to the law, it is illegal to throw a snowball at a public or private property or at any person on their property or in public. They went as far a to tie in discharging guns and missiles in with this law. We can understand the guns and missiles, but snowballs? Really?
Ridgeland, Mississippi
Law: You Cannot Put Burglar Bars Outside Of Your Windows
If you live in Ridgeland, you are not allowed to put bars on the outside of your windows. If the bars were installed before 1996, however, you can keep them. If you really want bars on the windows, you have to install them on the inside. That is legal. The reason for this law is unknown.
Missouri and Arkansas
Law: You Can Only Have a Certain Number of Female Roommates
If you live in Missouri or Arkansas, it is illegal to live in an apartment with several women. In Missouri, it is illegal to live in an apartment with three other women. Even if you have three sisters, you still cannot all live together. If you live in Arkansas, it would be illegal to rent an apartment with 5 other women. The reasons for these laws is because years ago the states were trying to stop Brothels. If they didn’t allow numerous women to live together, the Brothels would die down. Today, the law is very outdated and it is unknown if it is actually still enforced.
Rhode Island
Law: No Fences Over 6 Feet
If you live in Rhode Island and you want some privacy in your yard, you can put up a fence. However, the highest you can go is 6 feet. If you go any higher than that, the state will make you take it down or lower it. The reason for the fence law is so that your neighbors can get unobstructed views from their homes and to prevent conflict between neighbors. In order to enforce the law, your neighbor would need to call the police and have your neighbor shorten their fence.
Hawaii and New Mexico
Law: You Cannot Do Yard Work Early Sunday Morning
If you have ever got woken up to a neighbor moving their lawn or blowing leaves with a leaf blower on a Sunday morning, it wouldn’t be a problem in Hawaii and New Mexico, because it is illegal. There are other states such as New York and New Jersey don’t allow roofing jobs to be done on Sunday. These laws are all in place to avoid conflict between neighbors. It is also so that you can get some rest on a Sunday morning.
Arizona
Law: You Must Give Water to the Needy
In Arizona, it is illegal to ignore a homeless person who comes to your home begging for water on a hot day. Even if you own a business, you cannot turn a thirsty person away under penalty of law.
