10 Things to Do in DUMBO For Under $10

DUMBO, which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a Brooklyn neighborhood that includes the areas between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges and part of the Vinegar Hill area. This upscale part of town has fabulous art galleries, luxurious lofts, and is a fast rising tech and startup hub. There’s plenty to do in DUMBO, including activities that will set you back quite a bit. However, there are also many sights and attractions there that don’t cost a ton of money. Here are 10 things to do in DUMBO that cost less than $10.

1. Stroll the Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is an iconic landmark in the New York area and one of the most affordable attractions in DUMBO. You can visit any time of day or night — and it’s safe to do so — plus the views of the area, Manhattan, and Statue of Liberty are great there. With just over 1 mile of walking space on the Bridge, you’ll want to make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes. Outside of summer, take a sweater to stave off the evening chill and make your walk all the more pleasant.

2. Jane’s Carousel

Jane’s Carousel has quite a history, and the structure was originally placed in Youngstown, Ohio back in 1922. Today, it’s in DUMBO and available for your riding pleasure. Kids love Jane’s Carousel, but adults do as well — nothing beats it when it comes to nostalgia and whimsy. Have no shame about riding, as you’ll see plenty of other adults having a good time on the horses and carriages.

Cost: Tickets are $2 per person, per ride. Children who are less than 42 inches tall or age 3 and under can ride for free if they go on the Carousel with a paying adult.

3. Brooklyn Bridge Park

The six piers, ferry, greenway, and seven unique ecosystems that comprise Brooklyn Bridge Park make it one of the highlights of the DUMBO area. The waterfront area also has wonderful gardens, and it’s a prime place to relax and grab a moment of peace. The park is a favorite destination to hang out for a quiet afternoon and let children run and play, and there’s plenty to see and do there. History buffs and fans of sightseeing will enjoy the Civil War-era industrial buildings that still stand in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

4. Brooklyn Heights Promenade

The Brooklyn Heights Promenade deserves its own spot on this list, and its located in Brooklyn Bridge Park. However, residents and visitors to DUMBO alike go there just to see this stunning sight that is one of the most romantic places in all of New York City. When you visit, don’t be surprised to see a marriage proposal or couples sweetly cuddling there. The four story Brooklyn Heights Promenade is also a nice place to walk, jog, sit and have lunch, or enjoy the weather when it’s sunny outside. There’s plenty of benches there, along with playgrounds and lovely flowers beds.

5. Grimaldi’s Pizza

Few people in New York don’t know about Grimaldi’s Pizza, and it’s often been ranked as the best place to get an authentic pie in DUMBO. The blazing brick oven, fresh ingredients, and fabulous sauce on the pizzas here made it unique and super tasty. In addition to pies, Grimaldi’s sells beer, wine, calzones, and sides. The restaurant chain has several locations, and the one in DUMBO is at 1 Front Street.

Cost: You can get a half pie or a salad here for less than $10. The desserts are also less than $10 each.

6. 68 Jay St. Bar

If you’re looking for an affordable place to grab a drink and hang out with friends, check out 68 Jay St. Bar. This industrial, modern bar serves great beer and eats, and they also have an impressive wine selection. The interior is definitely artsy, but this spot has the benefit of having a peaceful ambiance — you won’t find rowdy crowds here.

Cost: During happy hour, which happens Monday through Friday from 4pm to 7pm, you can catch a drink special and get a snack for less than $10.

7. Jacques Torres Chocolate

Who doesn’t like a well made chocolate treat every now and then? You can get one at Jacques Torres Chocolate, a shop that has a touch of whimsy and eccentricity and a bevy of tempting treats on display. Don’t go here if you’re on a serious diet. Everyone else, however, will be delighted by the truffles, bars, sweets, cookies, and seasonal confections available. Jacques Torres Chocolate has some of the best Mexican hot chocolate around, and the shop also sells matzoh coated with toffee and chocolate during Passover.

Cost: You can purchase a few treats for less than $10, and the price of each item varies.

8. Jiannetto’s Pizza Truck

For a hot, delicious slice of pizza to go that’s super affordable, stop by Jiannetto’s Pizza Truck. Jiannetto’s started out in 1998 on Wall Street and has only gotten better since. The most notable item on the menu is the Grandma Sicilian Pie, which has won awards and is a local favorite. It combines fresh basil, mozzarella, and plum tomatoes on a thin Sicilian style crust — it not only tastes fantastic, but this particular pie won’t do too much damage to your waistline. You’ll also find hero sandwiches, fried calamari and zucchini, salads, mozzarella sticks, and other entrees on the menu.

Cost: Everything on the menu, with the exception of whole pizzas, is less than $10 and all drinks are just $1. You can get two slices and a drink and leave with money in your pocket.

9. Dumbo Boulders

Rock climbing isn’t just a way to exercise, it’s seriously fun. The best place to do it in DUMBO is Boulders. The price for an all day pass is very reasonable, and they offer a 1.5 hour introductory class for those who have never tried bouldering before. If you’re a seasoned pro, simply check in and have at it.

Cost: A day pass is $9.

10. Prospect Park Zoo

Prospect Park Zoo is a little gem in DUMBO that has 12 acres of land and over 125 species of animals. You’ll see red pandas, emus, species from Africa and Australia, adorable alpacas, and many more. There’s also concessions, a cafe, and picnic tables where you can bring your own lunch to eat.

Cost: Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for kids age 3 to 12, and $6 for seniors 65 and older. Children under 3 get in free.
