Submarine Force Library and Museum

Opened in 1955, the Submarine Force Library and Museum is a unique place that is home to more than 30,000 artifacts. This location boasts the USS Nautilus which is the first nuclear powered submarine in the entire world. People who visit the museum can take a 30 minute tour of the submarine and the museum brings in countless guests each year.

Avery Point Light

No trip to this little New England town would be complete without stopping by Avery Point Light. Constructed during the second World War, the light house had fallen into disrepair by the 1990s. In the early 2000s, funds were raised to restore the light house which is now considered a “memorial tower.” The Avery Point Light resides on Groton’s branch of the University of Connecticut campus, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Mystic Seaport

Located nearby Groton the town of Mystic, Mystic Seaport is one of the most popular attractions in Connecticut. Established in 1929, the seaport is “the largest maritime museum in the world,” and features a large collection of ships and boats. With more than 800 acres of space, Bluff Point was opened in 1963, and has a little something to offer everyone. Between beaches, cliffs, hiking trails, and recreational areas, it won’t be hard to find something to do at this awesome location.

Fort Griswold

Fort Griswold

Originally used as a United States military base, Fort Griswold saw a lot of action during its prime. In 1781, the fort was attached by Benedict Arnold and his troops, and the fort continued to be used during the War of 1812. After the Spanish-American War, the fort was retired, and the property is now owned by the state of Connecticut. The Ebenezer Avery House, which is on the property and was once used as a safe house for wounded soldiers, is open for yours during the summer.
