The $2 bill, first issued in 1862 as a legal tender note, initially featured Alexander Hamilton but changed to showcase Thomas Jefferson in 1869. After discontinuing in 1966 due to low popularity, the government reintroduced it in 1976 for the U.S. Bicentennial. The current design displays Jefferson’s portrait on the front and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the back.

Pre-1900 notes in excellent condition are the most coveted, with red-sealed bills generally outvaluing their green-sealed counterparts. The 1966-1976 period, during which $2 bills were temporarily discontinued, may yield scarce specimens. Condition plays a crucial role, as “very high-graded” bills command premium prices. While most contemporary $2 bills (those with green seals) are worth only face value, exceptional examples can fetch up to $5,000.
