In a powerful display of patriotism and gratitude, the Burnsville Town Square has been turned into a breathtaking sea of American flags. The Rotary Club of Burnsville has placed more than 300 American flags throughout the square, creating a stunning visual tribute ahead of Veterans Day.

Each 10-foot flag stands tall against the backdrop of small-town America, with the autumn mountains providing a perfect natural frame.

A Sea of Red, White, And Blue

What makes this display particularly meaningful is that each flag represents someone’s personal hero. Local businesses and individuals have sponsored these flags, with each bearing the name of someone they wish to honor. Walking through the rows of flags, you’ll find tributes to veterans who served decades ago alongside those who’ve returned from recent conflicts.

But the definition of “hero” extends beyond military service here. Among the honorees are public service officials, healthcare workers who battled through the pandemic, educators who shape future generations, and everyday community members whose quiet contributions make Burnsville special.

This inclusive approach reflects the community’s broad appreciation for all forms of service and sacrifice.

Community United In Remembrance And Gratitude

In rural Yancey County, this Veterans Day tradition has gone from a memorial to a powerful community unifier. As Ed Steel, secretary of the Rotary Club of Burnsville, explains: “We have people of many diverse backgrounds, but these flags and our love of country seem to bring people and the community together, and it absolutely transforms the town square.”

The visual impact is undeniable. Visitors from neighboring counties make special trips to witness the display, often bringing children to walk among the flags and learn about service and sacrifice. Local schools organize field trips, with students reading the names on flags and discussing what makes someone a hero in their community.

The project also demonstrates how small towns can create meaningful traditions that resonate deeply. What began years ago as a modest display has grown significantly, with participation increasing annually as more residents witness its emotional impact.

Service Beyond Symbolism

The Flags for Heroes actively contributes to ongoing community service. This year, proceeds from flag sponsorships will directly benefit the Reconciliation House and Yancey County Rescue Squad, extending the impact of each tribute into tangible support for local organizations.

A special celebration will take place this Saturday at noon in the Town Square, bringing together sponsors, honorees, and the wider community. This gathering adds a personal dimension to the visual display, as stories are shared and heroes are recognized publicly for their contributions.

The Rotary Club’s initiative perfectly mirrors their core mission of “Service Above Self.” By creating this annual tradition, they’ve established a sustainable way to honor heroes while addressing community needs. The flags may fly temporarily, but their impact resonates year-round through the programs they help fund.

So, as Veterans Day approaches, the Burnsville flag display stands as a reminder that heroism takes many forms, and that acknowledging service—whether in military uniform, medical scrubs, or classroom—strengthens the bonds that make communities resilient.
