We all love spoiling our furry companions, but sometimes, that well-meaning treat can wreak havoc on their digestive systems — certain human foods are a definite no-no. While alcohol, tobacco products, and salty and spicy foods on the banned list are more commonly known, this mini-guide shares 15 more common consumables that can cause problems for your dog, explaining why they’re off-limits.

Chocolate

This delightful treat for us is toxic to dogs. The culprit? Theobromine and caffeine can induce vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and even seizures in canines. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is. Skip the chocolate and opt for carob chips or specially formulated doggy ice cream.

Onions and Garlic

Allium plants, like onions and garlic, contain a compound that can damage a dog’s red blood cells, leading to anemia. In severe cases, canines may require blood transfusions. Their strong odor can also irritate your dog’s stomach. Stick to dog-safe veggies like carrots, green beans, or sweet potatoes.

Raw Meat and Raw Eggs

It is possible for your dog (and you!) to get sick from raw meat and eggs, which contain bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Raw eggs have an enzyme named avidin, which can result in skin and coat problems due to decreased absorption of some B vitamins.

Apple Seeds

Apple seeds contain cyanide. Depending on the quantity consumed, this chemical can result in vomiting, irregular and fast heartbeat, seizures, coma, and even death. While apples can serve as healthy snacks, ensure that your dog does not consume the core and the seeds of the fruit.

Cooked Bones

While gnawing on a bone might seem like a natural dog activity, cooked bones can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries, including intestinal blockage and intestinal perforation. Opt for raw or commercially prepared chew toys that are safe for your dog’s size and chewing habits.

Fatty Foods

Fatty cuts of meat, fried foods, and greasy table scraps can lead to pancreatitis, a painful inflammation of the pancreas. Keep your pup’s diet lean and healthy.

Xylitol

This artificial sweetener, found in sugar-free gum, candy, and some baked goods, is highly toxic to dogs and can result in a rapid drop in blood sugar, leading to seizures or liver failure. Always check ingredient labels carefully.

Grapes and Raisins

The most severe consequence of ingesting grapes or raisins is acute kidney failure. This condition can develop quickly and may become life-threatening if not treated promptly. Some dogs may eat a few grapes without any immediate adverse effects, while others can suffer severe reactions from ingesting even a small quantity.

Dairy Products

When dogs eat milk and dairy products, they can experience gastrointestinal upsets and inflammation of the pancreas, a condition called pancreatitis, which can be life-threatening. Due to the fact that many animals lack lactase, an enzyme that breaks down the sugars in dairy items, dogs who consume dairy items may suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal problems.

Avocado

Persin, a toxin found in avocado pits, leaves, and skin, can result in vomiting, diarrhea, and respiratory problems in dogs. The flesh of the avocado might be safe in very small quantities, but it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid it altogether.

Mushrooms

Many wild mushrooms are poisonous to dogs; even some cultivated varieties can cause stomach upset. Unless you’re a certified mushroom expert, it’s safest to avoid giving your dog any type of mushroom.

Nutmeg

This fragrant spice might be a holiday favorite for us, but it can be a real nightmare for dogs. There is a toxin in nutmeg called myristicin, which can cause hallucinations, tremors, seizures, and even death in high doses. The amount needed to cause harm can vary depending on the dog’s size and breed, so it’s best to avoid it altogether. In the event you suspect your dog has consumed nutmeg, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Yeast Dough

Raw yeast dough can rise in your dog’s stomach, causing bloating and discomfort. The fermentation process can also produce alcohol, further complicating the situation. Keep an eye on unbaked bread products and ensure your pup doesn’t snag any rising dough.

Macadamia Nuts

The toxin contained in macadamia nuts can cause weakness, muscle tremors, and vomiting in dogs. Additionally, their high fat content can lead to pancreatitis, an inflamed pancreas, which can be deadly.

Citrus Fruits

While refreshing and nutritious for humans, citrus fruits can be problematic for dogs. The primary concerns are their high citric acid content and essential oils. The citric acid can irritate a dog’s digestive system, leading to stomach upset, including vomiting and diarrhea. Essential oils like limonene and linalool can cause central nervous system depression, especially if consumed in large quantities.
