Recent polls and gathering of the statistics show that Americans are not as prone to establishing families which include children as they were in past generations. There is an increasing number of people who prefer to opt out of bearing and raising children. Whether for professional reasons or because they simple do not wish to sign on for the financial and emotional requirements, we’re seeing a trend in either singles or married couples who go through life without having children. While some cities are designed with amenities that are geared towards families with children, some others are more ideal for people who choose to remain childless. We’ve put together a listing of the top ten cities for couples who don’t want kids.

Reasons why couples prefer to not have children

Pregnancy and the delivery of a child is expensive. The medical costs of prenatal care and the delivery is high, often costing couples thousands even with health care coverage. This is just the beginning of the financial burden which includes food, clothing, housing, medical and dental care and the costs associated with education. In addition, parents lose a high amount of their freedom. They are often up with children for several hours at night and are responsible for meeting all of their needs for a significant number of years as they are growing.

1. Portland, ME

This city is among the best for young people and especially young couples who have not added children to their families. The numbers of couples without children in this city are on the rise and this means that the entertainment venues and other businesses will naturally follow suit with offerings that are more closely in line with the demographics. It is more suitable for hipsters and the crowd who enjoys their freedom.

2. Boston, MA

Boston is plainly a city that has an increase in childless couples. The most recent statistics show that less than seventeen percent of the total population are children. it is a city that is filled with professionals who have not included child rearing as a part of their life goals.

3. Ithaca, NY

Ithaca has a high population of students who are attending university. They have one of the lowest numbers of children from a statistical standpoint. There are very few of them running around and the total is a small 8.2 percent of the population. If you prefer to live in a city that doesn’t have hordes of children running the streets, Ithaca is a good choice.

Portland is a large city in the Pacific Northwest and it attracts a wide variety of people. Here is where you will find many couples and singles who are intentionally childless. People who appreciate new age philosophies and natural cures and remedies have set up countless shops within the city and surrounding areas. The focus of the majority of this population seems to center around making the world a better place to live and it appears that the intend to do so without adding to the population explosion. There are definitely children in good numbers in the Portland area, but not as many as you would expect. This city is also showing the results of the trend in abstaining from having children.

5. Santa Monica, CA

Pregnancy would make it difficult to keep the body a perfect ten. We see quite a few bikinis running along the ocean front and not many of them are sporting a baby bump. The city is geared towards young adults with entertainment venues which don’t admit people under the age of 18 and in even more cases, 21 years of age. It is a city that is designed more for adults than children so if you are planning to raise a family, this may not be your best choice.

6. Madison, WI

Madison is a city that is well known for peace and quiet. There is a small percentage of children living in the city and the total percentage of persons under 18 is at 17.5 percent. Although not the lowest percentage points, it shows that the majority of people living in this city are not having children. If you value peace and quiet, Madison is one of the better choices in the area.

7. New Orleans, LA

New Orleans is a city that offers some of the best Southern/Cajun food in the world. They also have a great party environment with plenty of drinking establishments and some good musical concerts. Famous for Mardi Gras, New Orleans has a low percentage of children and a high percentage of opportunities to party and have a great time. This is not the best environment for raising children and it isn’t intended to be. If you’re looking for a city that is low on kids then this is one of the better choices.

8. Las Vegas, NV

What can we say, Las Vegas has some places that the kids will enjoy visiting but the city is not built for children. While some people will take their children along on vacations through Vegas, most of us would rather arrange for a sitter. The environment is not geared towards the needs of children. Get with it parents, VEGAS is for adults. It’s a great place for couples who don’t want kids to live because there really aren’t that many who have taken up residence here.

9. Pittsburgh, PA

Pittsburgh is a city with a very low percentage of a mere 16.3 percent of its population being under the age of 18. It doesn’t have many young people in residence. It does have one of the highest number of bars in town though. This may be a result of few children and the need to make money off of what the public wants. Yes, there are a lot of hangovers in the city, but for couples who don’t want kids, it’s an ideal place to set up housekeeping.

10. Miami Beach, FL

Miami Beach is home to many celebrities including actors, musicians and athletes. You don’t see a large number of strollers being pushed around the streets. This is because only 12.8 percent of the total city population is under the age of 18. If you’re interested in a party city that does not cater to children then you may be comfortable in Miami Beach.
