Those of us who live in Birmingham, Alabama take great pride in our home. We live in the Heart of Dixie and we love it. Our home is special and unique. When people come to visit our city they often don’t understand much about it. There are certain things that people in Birmingham, Alabama always need to explain to out-of-towners, because if you don’t live her, you just wouldn’t understand.

Houndstooth Will Never Go Out of Style

You can walk down the street wearing Houndstooth at any time, and you will always be wearing the latest style. This goes back to the famous Alabama coach, Paul “Bear” Bryant. During his 25 year tenure, he led the team to 6 national conference titles and championships. Fans often honor him by dressing in Houndstooth during the games and even on the streets. Many of the clothing designed here in Birmingham has some part of Houndstooth included in the design.

All Major Events in Birmingham Are Planned Around Football Games

If you are from Birmingham, Alabama, you would understand the importance of football. If you are planning a wedding or a christening, you check the football schedules first. When women are pregnant in Birmingham, they schedule a C-section during the week. This way, they can be sure that they will be home from the hospital with their bundle of joy come game day. We will do just about anything to keep from missing the big game.

Our Meals are Confusing to Out-Of-Towners

If you aren’t from Birmingham, Alabama and someone asks you to dinner, you will likely be ready around 6 pm. This will make you very late for your dinner date. In Birmingham, we call lunch dinner. If you were to ask someone to go to dinner, it would actually be lunch. If you wanted to invite someone from Birmingham to eat at 6 pm, you would invite them to supper. It can get confusing, however, after a few meals you will get the hang of it. Don’t worry, breakfast is still called breakfast no matter what part of Alabama you are visiting.

Our Barbecue Sauce is White

If you are ever invited to a cookout in Birmingham, don’t be surprised if your meat is smothered in a white sauce. It is still barbecue, it just isn’t your typical barbecue. Big Bob Gibson’s White Sauce may look strange, but if you smother it on any meat, you will be happy with the results. It has a tangy, peppery kick that people in this part of the country absolutely love. If you can’t get past the color of the sauce, Big Bob Gibson’s also has two types of sauce that are red. They don’t compare with the white sauce, however.

We Are Proud of the Pantless Vulcan in Birmingham

If you are walking down the street in Birmingham, you will likely see the statue of a Roman God, who is 56 feet tall and stands on a pedestal that is 123 feet tall. In total, the statue stands over 175 feet. If you look close at the statue’s rear end, it looks like his buttocks are uncovered. The people who live in the suburb of Homewood are mooned on a daily basis. They don’t care, though, we are incredibly proud of our statue.

Everyone Has Grits in Their Kitchen Cabinets

People in Birmingham, Alabama keep grits in their kitchens the same way people around the country have bread. It is a necessary staple. We don’t eat instant grits like people in other areas of the country. They just aren’t real grits. We eat them often, and to give them some extra flavor, we met cheese on the top of them. If you don’t eat grits, you are a true Alabamam.

The Unofficial State Bird of Alabama is the Mosquito

Many people who are just visiting Birmingham are not prepared for the mosquitoes. The humidity brings swarms of mosquitoes and those of us who live here understand this. Bug spray is just as much of a staple in a home in Alabama as grits are. People who are visiting Birmingham from another part of the country often go home covered in mosquito bites.

We Only Take Our Tea Cold and Sweet

If you aren’t from Birmingham and you walk into a coffee shop and ask for a hot cup of tea, people will look at you like you are crazy. In Birmingham, we drink out tea extremely cold and extremely sweet. The only time we would even consider drinking hot tea is if we are sick. Even then, it doesn’t really happen. If you try our famous sweet tea, you may never want to leave Birmingham because you will never find any place that makes it quite the same way.

We Don’t Panic During the Ring of Storm Sirens

If you are just visiting Birmingham and you hear the ring of storm sirens, you will likely start to panic. Those of us who live here understand that this is a relatively regular occurrence. While the sirens are a signal for us to take cover, we often head outdoors to get a look at the storm on the horizon. We do understand, however, that it is important to take cover when things start looking bad. We just don’t panic when we hear the sound because we hear it so often.

The Thought of Snow Terrifies Us

If the weatherman says that there is snow or ice in the forecast, we panic. We rarely see snow so we don’t know how to prepare the way New Englanders do. If you are visiting Birmingham and there is snow in the forecast, you will likely see empty shelves in the store. Suddenly there will be no milk, bread, toilet paper, and every other essential. If it does actually snow and it sticks on the roads, you should expect traffic jams and accidents on every Birmingham road.

We may eat and drink strange things, we may dress funny, and we even love having a pantless statue in our city. Just because we love white barbecue sauce and we schedule family suppers around football games, it doesn’t mean that we don’t live in the best city in America. Those of us from Birmingham are proud of our city and we have no problem telling the world.
